The China Open began as the China International in 1997 as a non-ranking tournament, with a hiatus in 1998, only to return in 1999 as a ranking tournament known as the China International in 1999. Following that it has remained a ranking tournament known as the China Open, although it did not take place from 2001 – 04.

The tournament currently takes place at the Beijing University Students' Gymnasium, in late March and early April, and it is the last ranking event before the World Championship.
